Muffuletta Sandwich Recipe

🛒 What You’ll Need

The Star Ingredient: Zesty Olive Salad 🫒

  • 1 cup Chopped mixed olives (green and black)
  • 1/2 cup Roasted red peppers, diced
  • 1/4 cup Pickled giardiniera (Italian pickled veggies), chopped
  • 2 tbsp Capers, drained
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced 🧄
  • 1/4 cup Fresh parsley, chopped 🌿
  • 1/4 cup Extra virgin olive oil 🫒
  • 1 tbsp Red wine vinegar 🍷

The Sandwich Assembly:

  • 1 Large loaf Round Italian or Muffuletta bread (about 10 inches) 🍞
  • 1/4 lb Salami, thinly sliced 🍖
  • 1/4 lb Ham, thinly sliced 🍖
  • 1/4 lb Mortadella, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 lb Provolone cheese, sliced 🧀
  • 1/4 lb Mozzarella cheese, sliced 🧀

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Make the Olive Salad: In a bowl, combine all the olive salad ingredients. Mix well and let it sit for at least an hour (or overnight!) so the flavors can marry. This is the secret to a great Muffuletta! 🥣✨
  2. Prep the Bread: Slice your large round loaf in half horizontally. Scoop out a little of the extra bread from the center of the top and bottom to make room for all that goodness. 🍞🔪
  3. The Base Layer: Spread half of the olive salad (and its oil!) generously over the bottom half of the bread. Let that oil soak in! 🫒🤤
  4. Stack the Meats: Layer the ham, salami, and mortadella on top of the olives. 🍖
  5. Add the Cheeses: Layer the provolone and mozzarella over the meats. 🧀✨
  6. Top it Off: Spread the remaining olive salad over the cheese and place the top half of the bread on. 🥪
  7. The Wait (The Hardest Part!): Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and place a heavy plate or skillet on top for about 30 minutes. This “presses” the flavors together and lets the juices soak into the bread. ⏲️🏋️
  8. Serve: Slice into wedges and enjoy! 🍽️😋

🔥 Pro Tips:

  • Temperature: This sandwich is traditionally served at room temperature, but it’s also incredible if you pop it in the oven for a few minutes to get the cheese melty! 🌡️🔥
  • The Bread: If you can’t find authentic Muffuletta bread, a large, soft Italian boule or even a sturdy focaccia works great! 🍞🎯
