🛒 Ingredients

For the Red Velvet Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups All-purpose flour 🌾
  • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder 🍫
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) Active dry yeast 🍞
  • 1/2 tsp Salt 🧂
  • 3/4 cup Warm milk (approx. 110°F) 🥛
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter, melted 🧈
  • 1 Large egg, room temperature 🥚
  • 1-2 tsp Red food coloring (for that iconic color!) 🔴

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter, softened 🧈
  • 1 cup Brown sugar, packed 🍬
  • 2 tbsp Ground cinnamon 🪵

For the Cream Cheese Glaze:

  • 4 oz Cream cheese, softened 🥣
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter, softened 🧈
  • 1 1/2 cups Powdered sugar ☁️
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract ✨
  • 1-2 tbsp Milk (to reach desired consistency) 🥛

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. 🫧✨
  2. Mix the Dough: Stir in the melted butter, egg, and red food coloring. Gradually add flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms. 🔴🥣
  3. Knead & Rise: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour (or until doubled). ⏲️📈
  4. Roll & Fill: Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture. 🥐🪵
  5. Cut & Second Rise: Roll the dough up tightly and cut into 12 even rolls. Place them in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes. 🍥📏
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20–25 minutes until the rolls are set and lightly browned on the edges. ⏲️🔥
  7. Glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk together the glaze ingredients until smooth. Spread the glaze over the warm rolls immediately after taking them out of the oven! ☁️🍥✨

🔥 Pro Tips:

  • Don’t Overbake: Red velvet can get dry quickly! Check them at the 20-minute mark to ensure they stay pillowy soft. ⏲️🚫
  • The “Warm” Secret: If your kitchen is cold, let your dough rise inside an oven that is turned OFF but has the oven light on for gentle heat. 💡🌡️
