Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

🛒 Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/4 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Flour
  • 1 cup Mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small Onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Thyme

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Form the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Shape into oval-shaped patties.
  2. Sear: Brown the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat until a nice crust forms on both sides (they don’t need to be cooked through yet!). Remove and set aside.
  3. Sauté Veggies: In the same skillet, add your sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until tender and golden brown.
  4. Make the Roux: Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir for about a minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  5. Simmer the Gravy: Slowly whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Let it simmer until the sauce begins to thicken and get glossy.
  6. Combine: Place the beef patties back into the gravy. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes until the steaks are fully cooked through and the flavors have melded together. 🥘

🔥 Pro Tips:

  • The Perfect Side: Serve this over a massive pile of creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles to soak up every drop of that gravy! 🥔🍜
  • Extra Flavor: If you have it on hand, a splash of red wine in the gravy adds a wonderful depth! 🍷
